Project Overview

CARGO Work is a one-of-a-kind contemporary office building on a prominent corner site at Wapping Wharf, Bristol’s much-lauded new harbourside neighbourhood. The steel frame building was constructed behind the walls of the former Bristol Gaol, featuring rain screen cladding made bespoke to imitate the signature shipping containers which feature in the popular retail areas of the development.

The 20,270 sq m scheme was constructed to a very high standard and comprises four levels, providing high specification light-filled office facilities on all floors.

This unique project also features a glazed courtyard canopy, balconies and terraces providing outside space, with upper floors offering stunning views across southern Bristol.

We were delighted to construct this unique office space, utilising a historic site in the heart of Bristol city centre.

Halsall are passionate about working with the local communities around are sites and as such, issued newsletters to local residents advising them of upcoming works which may pose noise or traffic disruptions.

We also strive to serve the local community beyond  simple communication. Therefore, we worked to create opportunities for local businesses and provide our site workers with upskilling.

92% of our supply chain for this project was within the local area, not only providing more job opportunities for businesses in the area, but also reducing carbon emissions.

Challenges and Solutions

CHALLENGE

The site is in a city centre location with tight access and many local residents and business in close proximity to the site.

SOLUTION

We coordinated all deliveries to this busy site to avoid peak hours and also to minimise traffic noise. We worked collaboratively with the community and client to ensure all concerns were understood and dealt with.

CHALLENGE

An increased delay in the supply of materials, and often the inability to supply materials, due to Covid-19 and the economic effects it had on the country.

SOLUTION

We provided alternative product specifications where  available which were approved by the client and design team, testament to the collaborative working relationship with our client. Our procurement process was slickened to ensure early orders of materials were placed, avoiding delays and suppliers inability to meet demands as much as possible. Where equipment and services were unavailable, we sourced alternative measures and reviewed our logistics plans to avoid the delay of project phases.

CHALLENGE

The unavoidable Covid restrictions for all people on-site posed logistical difficulties.

SOLUTION

We provided suitable PPE for everyone on site to minimise the risk of contracting Covid, displayed NHS approved Covid safety posters to encourage strict  hygiene routines, and revised our logistics plan to ensure social distancing was adhered to.
