Project Overview

This project consisted of the construction of a new steel frame two form entry school. Internally there are four classrooms to each floor with a sports hall and commercial kitchen.

The build is heated with radiant heat panels to reduce the energy usage by heating the person not the area.

Halsall has an extensive amount of experience in constructing and refurbishing schools, colleges and universities. This was a key factor in why Halsall were selected as the main contractor.

This is the first primary school to be built in the Amesbury area in more than ten years. The school was very much needed due to the increasing number of houses that have been built in and around the area, with the existing primary schools being at full capacity.

Challenges and Solutions

Two key subcontractors went into liquidation during the project.

Open communication with the customer and active collaboration from the new subcontractors enabled us to keep the effects to the programme to a minimum.

There was a change to the flooring which caused an acoustic reverberation issue.

To overcome this acoustic rafts were installed but as the sprinkler system, lighting and radiant panels were installed this meant heavy redesign at late stages of the project.

There was a historic graveyard within the grounds of the site and a skeleton was found.

An archaeological watching brief was carried out during the excavation phase of the project. This meant careful management of our subcontractors to ensure a smooth process.
