Brymore Academy

Customer:

Bridgwater and Taunton College Trust

Contract:

JCT Design and Build

Duration:

24 Weeks

Value:

£650k

Project Overview

The project consisted of the demolition of the existing building and the design and construction of the new structural steel frame milking parlour inclusive of classroom, offices, storage and welfare facilities. Halsall employed it’s extensive design knowledge and operated within its well established procedure to deliver an efficient, well coordinated and objective focussed preconstruction/design phase. Works included a 2500 litre milk collection/holding tank, high pressure water heater for sterilizing the tank and all milk lines upon wash out, one large air compressor, two milk pumps, five milking stations. All installed to service 17 cows only, as it is a training academy and not officially a profit making farm.

The Farm is at the heart of Brymore and for students interested in working within the Land Based Industry Agriculture is an excellent choice. The carousel system means that the students get to visit the farm during all of the seasons, learning the basics in health and safety, routine husbandry and practical skills around the farm. Students will learn how to weigh the pigs and calves, assist with sheep husbandry and learn about animal health. The milking parlour introduces a variety of opportunities to the students. Agriculture is at the heart of what Brymore Academy do and this building is a real statement of intent for the school.

Challenges and Solutions

Only a finite budget was available for our client to have the works completed.

We engaged with the project consultants and completed the design in advance of the main contract.

The design, layout, materials and finishes were progressively selected with regular checks and reference against the costs plan. We targeted value engineering and ultimately the project was designed to meet the budget.

The customer was therefore able to place the contract assured in the knowledge they would receive a building that satisfied their needs and that would be delivered within the constraints of their available funding.

Brymore Academy remained open throughout the construction of the new milking parlour.

All deliveries were managed and coordinated with the academy. Clear and precise signage around the academy was  implemented.
