Work has commenced at Minehead Middle School on a new extension that will house three classrooms, a reception, first aid room and therapy room, as well as office and storage space.
The £516,000 project, including the demolition of existing temporary classrooms, is being undertaken by South West-based Halsall Construction Ltd.
The new extension, which will create improved facilities for both children and staff, is expected to be completed in Spring 2011.
Mrs Judy Shore, Assistant Head of Resources, said “This is the biggest building project Minehead Middle School has ever undertaken.“
“We have been working very closely with our Chartered Surveyors, Slade Parry, to achieve a building design that met both our design brief and budget.”
“The project will provide a high quality learning environment for our children in rooms which are purpose built with high quality materials. We have been able to include this build into our programme this year because of sound financial management and planning and it is the culmination of five years hard work.”
